“The hospital says it is asserting a lien over my case for my medical bills while I was a patient there."

Most states allow hospitals and doctors to assert liens over personal injury claims for unpaid medical bills. There are a lot of questions one has to ask here. Was the lien asserted correctly? Was Medicare involved? Does my state allow for a reduction in the liens or apportionment between the health care providers? Should my health insurance have paid? You must not assume that the business office of the hospital is looking out for your best interests as presumably its doctors and nurses are doing. Hospitals are in the business of making money whether they have the word “mercy,” “children’s,” “saint,” or “regional” in their name. You need to speak with us if you have these issues.
